Few people understand the delicacy of pearl jewelry, especially those that contain low luster pearls. Something as small as wearing fragrances while wearing your pearls could change them for the worse. Too often people come to jewelers to figure out what has happened to their precious pearls and they come to find out that toiletries and perfumes are the cause. When pearls have been exposed to all sorts of body products, it gets caked up with residue. It is a force of habit that we spray our fragrances at key points, including our necks, wrists and even our ankles and behind our ears. The jewelry we wear in these areas come in contact with the products we put in these areas and eventually cause the jewelry to become dull and caked up.

Pearls

Pearls are very delicate and are usually the ones that receive the most harm from such use of products. Pears are organic and cannot withstand the chemicals that are found in lotions, perfumes and makeup. In some cases, you can simply wipe down the pearls to restore their natural beauty, but other cases there will need to be more done or sometimes they are beyond repair. Hair spray, fragrances, body oils, lotions and other items can remove the top layer of pearls, making them dull and unrepairable.

If you wear pearl jewelry regularly, it is important that you use little product BEFORE you put on your pearl pieces to avoid too much contact with the products. Try using natural products that contain less chemical as well.
